Roma’s goalkeeper, Morgan De Sanctis was the first one who expressed “disappointment, frustration and regret” for the team’s Europa League exit to Fiorentina. The Giallorossi were beaten 3-0 at the Olimpico on Thursday (19/3).
The 37-year-old goalkeeper watched as replacement shot-stopper Lukasz Skorupski who conceded three goals before half time. He did not play in the game, but was the only E|Roma player to meet the media after the final whistle. “There are contracts and someone had to come here. The rules do not allow you to just avoid talking in these situations,” the goal keeper said, showing his directness to the press.
The last result of the game drowned Roma into a 4-1 aggregate loss against La Viola, thus failing the progress to the quarter-finals. Roma’s season is falling apart, out of Europe League and with only one won in Serie A in the last two months. The team fell apart by conceding three goals in the first 20 minutes, and the fans on the Curva Sud was left practically empty as they voted with their feet.
De Sanctis feels that the club missed out the chance to be the champion of the tournament on a crucial turning point. “The feeling in the locker room, general and shared, is to say nothing,” said De Sanctis to explain the team’s condition after the game.
The fans slowly filtered back into the ground in time for the final whistle, when the player went over to explain the team. De Sanctis tries to understand the fans’ feeling whom directly deliver their protests, “we have to take responsibilities to listen to their thoughts. Their disappointment is also our disappointment,” he continued. According to De Sanctis, there are a lot of bitterness and other things to be angry about, because Roma have not won at home for three months. Thursday’s game was actually the right moment to put in a great performance for The Giallorossi.
De Sanctis and his teammates left the Stadio Olimpico by a back door to avoid fans who were congregated by the players’ entrance. Coach Rudi Garcia also left in a private car rather on the team bus. Even security services were put on alert for Roma’s planned training session with angry fans expected to be in attendance at Trigoria.
And it seems that De Sanctis really takes the club’s matter to his heart, as he says he wants to win a trophy with the club before he retires. He admitted that the team have past some moments of difficulty, and he will be loyal to the Roma jersey and “give my all for this club.”
