Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he will not make a move to sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann despite reports in Spain suggesting the Premier League champions are preparing a summer bid. The Blues have been heavily linked with the 24-year-old, who has a £47.1million release clause in his contract. However the boss has made it clear that Griezmann is not on his shopping list for the upcoming transfer window.
Recently, Mourinho was quick to distance his club from a bid for the player as he spoke to reporters on Chelsea’s end-of-season tour of Australia. “Griezmann is a great striker but is not within our objectives to strengthen the squad for next season. We’re not interested,” said Mourinho in a statement.
Griezmann only arrived from Real Sociedad last summer, smashing 25 goals in 44 starts for his new club. And the French international says he has no plans to quit the Vicente Calderon Stadium. The statement should put an end to speculation linking the French Player of the Year with a move to Stamford Bridge. On the other hand, the Argentina international has been linked with a move away from Turin this summer as Massimo Allegri’s men prepare for their Champions League final against Barcelona this Saturday.
But Griezmann himself has insisted that he is keen to stay at his current club. He said: “I’m good at Atletico. I just arrived and I’m not a player who moves after the first year. I still need to learn and know that I can do it here and get very far at Atletico. I hope I can. I do not know interest from other clubs is true or not because they are rumours. I am happy at Atletico.”
Atlético Madrid reached an agreement with Real Sociedad for the transfer of Griezmann in 2014, for a fee believed to be close to his £24 million buy-out clause. During his first campaign, Griezmann recorded a total of 22 goals in the league, which is the highest total recorded by a French player in a single Spanish top-division campaign
Meanwhile, Chelsea goalkeeper PetrCech is edging closer to making a decision on his future, with the experienced player being strongly linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester United. The Czech Republic international said: “I don’t know. I will join the national team and then when the season is over I will weigh up my options and decide.”
