Newcastle United’s Ayoze Perez is hoping his unforgettable first year on Tyneside is just the start of great things, and is hoping to give fans better memories next season. Ayoze Perez signed for Newcastle exactly a year ago today. The Spanish under-21 international signed for the Magpies exactly 12 months ago yesterday from Tenerife, despite interest from both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Parachuted in from the Spanish second division, the young striker was thrown into the first game of the season as a substitute against then Champions Manchester United and never looked back. Although he wasn’t expected to feature much this season, the Spaniard became a key player in an otherwise miserable campaign for Newcastle.
Perez went on to feature in 36 of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League games, both as a starter and from the bench, and scored seven vital goals in the process. The forward has backed the team to push on after securing their Premier League survival. Despite giving the fans little to cheer about last term, Perez is hopeful that Newcastle can go from strength to strength in the next few years.
The Magpies avoided relegation on the final day of the 2014-15 campaign following a tumultuous season both on and off the pitch at St James’ Park. Former Tenerife striker Perez was one of the few positive developments of a depressing campaign and confirming himself as a player to watch after a cut-price summer move from the Spanish second tier.
Speaking to nufc.co.uk about his maiden season on Tyneside he said: “For me, playing in the Premier League was a dream since I was a child and Newcastle United has given me the chance to make this dream come true.”
The 20-year-old impressed sufficiently to win a first cap for Spain’s U21 side and he hopes his first-season progress will continue as the club look to avoid the kind of relegation battle that had players and supporters alike biting their fingernails before the final day win over West Ham.
“It has been an unforgettable year and I hope it’s just the beginning of something big here in Newcastle. I also remember with a smile my first goal in the Premier League against Tottenham; we won that match with this goal,” said Perez.
The one moment Ayoze Perez will never forget though, is the one when Jonas Gutierrez made his emotional return against Manchester United. “I will keep forever in my memory the return of Jonás against Manchester United.”
“I’m now looking forward next season to seeing the Toon Army in St. James’ again, giving them better moments than this year,” added the forward.
