Barcelona completed the Treble with a 3-1 win over Juventus in the Champions League final. Barca, who had already won the Spanish title and the Copa Del Rey, won their second Treble in six years, becoming the first team to ever do it twice.
Six years ago, Barca completed their first ever treble won by a Spanish side. At the time, Barça finished the season by beating the previous year’s Champions League winners Manchester United 2–0 at the StadioOlimpico in Rome, went on to win the 2009 Supercopa de España against Athletic Bilbaoand the 2009 UEFA Super Cup against Shakhtar Donetsk. The wins made Barca as the first European club to win both domestic and European Super Cups following a treble.
2008/09 and 2014/15 go down in history as the two greatest seasons in FC Barcelona history. After beating Juventus at the Olympiastadion on Saturday night, they have completed the treble of Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League, just like they did under Pep Gaurdiola six years ago.
Barcelona also won the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup and became the first football club ever to accomplish the sextuple. As well as Barça, the other six teams to have won the continental title and their domestic league and cup double in the same season. The teams include Glasgow Celtic in 1967, followed by Netherland sides: Ajax Amsterdam in 1972 and PSV Eindhoven in 1988. Manchester United won the treble champions in 1999, while 2010 was the year for Italian side, Inter Milan. Before Barca gained their second treble, Bayern Munich lifted their trophies in 2013.
Six years later, now under Luis Enrique, and they have done it again. They clinched the league title at the Vicente Calderón, home of the defending champions, with a game in hand. Athletic were once again the victims in the cup final, this time at the Camp Nou, and the Champions League was secured on Saturday night in the German capital against another side that was chasing a treble, Juventus of Turin.
Ivan Rakitic gave Barca the lead very early on only for Alvaro Morata to equalise against the run of play. But Barca were not to be denied as Luis Suarez put them back in front and Neymar made sure with the last kick of the game. This year, Barca won the competition to cap a remarkable treble under Luis Enrique.
