According to local Spanish newspaper, Liverpool have triggered the £14.2million release clause of Villarreal striker Luciano Vietto. The 21-year-old Argentinian has been on Liverpool’s radar for a while and Atletico are willing to pay his €20 million release fee. The Reds have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Villarreal striker Luciano Vietto this week, with the player’s agent admitting that his client could move on this summer if the buyout clause is met.
The young Argentine has been in fantastic form during his debut campaign for the Yellow Submarines to claim 20 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions. That includes twelve strikes in La Liga alongside a return of eight goals and four assists from his 12 Europa League outings.Vietto is contracted with Villarreal until 2019 but does have a relatively modest buyout clause of 20m Euros.
Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are also understood to be interested in Vietto, who confirmed his buyout clause in a recent interview with Spanish radio. The Express claim that Arsenal are also among his list of suitors, with the Gunners having been made aware of the fee which will trigger a move.
Atletico are understood to be the striker’s preferred destination, but his arrival would add some much-needed dynamism to Brendan Rodgers’ front-line. It follows a campaign in which the Reds’ current striking options – Daniel Sturridge, Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini and Mario Balotelli – managed to net just eight Premier League goals between them.
Despite the general feeling that Vietto will leave Villarreal in the upcoming window the Spanish club are said to be reluctant to sell.
Vietto’s agent, Jorge Cyterszpiler, who was quoted by the Express on Wednesday, admitted that a move could definitely happen during the summer months, despite the player being happy at Estadio El Madrigal. “We know that a lot of big clubs are watching Luciano Vietto,” the representative said. “There is a lot of competition for him. I think he could leave Villarreal in the summer.”
The player himself is quoted saying:”No-one can guarantee what will happen in the future, but my idea is to be here when they call us. If Atletico offer €20m, I’ll talk it through with my family and agent.“We’ll try and come to the best decision, but I think everybody wins if they meet my buyout clause.”
Among the other interested clubs, Liverpool are by no means only interested party, however.
