Paris Saint-Germain became the first French football club in history to complete a domestic clean sweep when they beat AJ Auxerre 1-0 on Saturday to lift the Coupe de France. Prior to the victory, no team had ever managed to lift the Ligue 1, Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France trophies in one season.
It was the capital club’s ninth French Cup title and moves them within one of the record held by bitter rivals Olympique de Marseille. Coupe de France followed Paris Saint-Germain’s successes in retaining the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de la Ligue and the pre-season Trophee des Champions, making them the first team ever to win all four trophies in the same season.
Cavani and ZlatanIbrahimovic, back in the team following a calf injury, were typically threatening for the opponent.
EdinsonCavani’s powerful header in the second half was ultimately enough for Laurent Blanc’s men to seal the win and complete the historic victory.Cavani got the crucial goal as Paris Saint-Germain beat Auxerre to win the Coupe de France. The Uruguay international scored the winning goal in Saturday’s final match to complete an historic domestic quadruple; prompting Al-Khelaifi to label Cavani as ‘the best striker in the world’.
Cavani finished his season with another important goal and kept up his impressive scoring record at the national stadium, adding to the braces he has managed in PSG’s back-to-back Coupe de la Ligue final successes.
The Uruguayan completes a superb end of the season, with 13 goals in his last nine domestic games to end the campaign. His 31 goals in all competitions is the joint-best record in France along with Olympique Lyonnais’ AlexandreLacazette and one better than team-mate Ibrahimovic. Thanks to Cavani, though, the men from the capital are in the history books.
The 28-year-old has been linked with a summer move to clubs including Manchester United and Juventus, but Al-Khelaifi insists he will be staying in Paris. On the other hand, the player has expressed his frustration at playing out wide to accommodate ZlatanIbrahimovic. “I don’t know whether I will stay at PSG. I might stay, I might leave… You never know what will happen in football,’ admitted Cavani.
As it was, PSG won, but the victory demonstrated more negatives than positives. Ibrahimovic’s performance was disappointing. And midfield trio of Motta, Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi was strangely subdued until later in the game. However, ultimately their quality shone through and this PSG side go into the record books as the first team in French football history to remain consistent.
