Italian football icon Andrea Pirlo could be playing in the A-League next season, with representatives of the Juventus star planning to meet with clubs over a proposed move next season. Just a day after Pirlo lost the UEFA Champions League final to Barcelona with Juventus, Sydney FC have made an approach for the midfielder, who was given the green light to seek a move abroad at the end of the season.
The Italian looks set to leave Turin this summer, with Saturday’s 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona possibly his last appearance for the Old Lady. Pirlo had been tipped to sign for New York City in the MLS, but Sydney are attempting to hijack the deal.
Representatives of Sydney FC and Pirlo’s agent are set to meet on Tuesday to discuss a potential move to the Harbour City to become the club’s new marquee player. The iconic Italian midfielder has one more year to run on his contract with the theSerie A champions but Australian based agent Lou Sticca told Italian media.
“My project here in Italy is clear: if Andrea decides to leave Italy for other markets and other leagues – and I will move only in this case, I feel it is my duty to plant the seed to get him to Australia,” Sticca told Italian media.
New York City remain in the box seat to snare the Italian legend should he leave Juventus, but A-League hopes have been raised, even slightly. The man who orchestrated Del Piero’s arrival, Sticca, pitched the competition to Pirlo’s management overnight. And the good news, according to Fox Sports European correspondent Daniel Garb, is that “it has not been ruled out” yet.
Season 10 was another year of consolidation for the A-League. But a turbo charge and box office injection is just the tonic to ensure that next season goes to another level and interest continues to grow, rather than just maintain at its current level.
Pirlo has already expressed his desire to play abroad, having publicly stated he will not play for another Italian club after winning a third successive Serie A title with Juventus. Meanwhile, the combination of love of the sport, the A-League’s growing popularity and star power can be a potent combination for the sport.
Del Piero was brilliant; Pirlo has the potential to be even bigger.Juve hero Alessandro Del Piero moved to
Sydney after his time in Turin came to an end, and Sticca hopes Pirlo will follow in his footsteps. He said: “Everyone knows that New York is an option. But I’m here to put Australia forward for consideration. What gives me hope is that he was in Australia with Juventus in 2014 and has already seen the nation.”
