Recently, FC Bayern Munchen finished their primary big-name signing of the summer and they also announced about the new signing Douglas Costa that would be joining the club on a long-term deal. Talking about Douglas Costa, who is he and how he joined the club? Here are ten facts about Costa, the former Hamburg player, taken from bundesliga.com.
The Brazilian international player, Douglas Costa de Souza was born on 14 September 1990 in Sampucaia do Sul. When he was 11, he decided to join the youth ranks of EC Novo Hamburgo or in English it is known as EC New Hamburg. He was 12 when he joined the well-known youth academy Gremio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense that has produced eminent players like Ze Roberto, Marcelinho and Grafite. He then made his first step up into the first team in 2008.
Costa’s skills and abilities could be seen since his six years in the youth ranks at Gremio. He won the Punta Cup, an eminent South American youth tournament. Moreover, he won the Golden Boot at the Taca Belo Horizonte de Juniores, a competition provided for Under-20 sides in Brazil.
When talking about role model, Costa mentioned some famous names not only one of the greatest players in football history but also some names of the Gremio youth academy products. One of his big role models is Ronaldo de Assis Moreira or Ronaldinho. Costa then decided to leave Gremio in 2001, just a year before he joined the club.
The name ‘Douglas’ was given by his father who hoped that his son would stand out in the football talent pool. Another reason behind the name ‘Douglas’ is it has something related to one of Novo Hamburgo’s most eminent sons, Maicon Douglas Sisenando, who was known as Miacon that won the UEFA Champions League with Internazionale de Milano against the Bavarians in 2010.
Douglas is not only keen on football but he also has passion on cue and playing poker. It is still his father who taught him how to do those passions. Douglas turned into a professional player in 2008 with Gremio and after he was reported as one of Brazil’s brightest talents. Some famous clubs are believed to have registered interest in the 18-year-old player include FC Barcelona, Manchester United FC, Read Madrid CF, and FC Bayern. Unfortunately, the issue said that the transfer never materialized since Douglas did not gave consistent performances.
