Michael Zorc, Borussia Dortmund sporting director stated that Julian Weigl has signed a real prospect in central midfield. The sporting director also confirmed about the deal to bring the 19-year-old player from TSV 1860 Munich to the Signal Iduna Park. Zorc also said that Weigl has a lot of potential to develop.
Weigl joined the team when he was 15. His ability keeps improving to fit into an all-star BVB midfield. He told goal.com in one of his few interviews since he joined the team that he hoped to be in the squad and to play regularly. He also said that he did not come to play in the youth team. He has experienced a lot in his career during 2014/15 breakthrough season compared to others who still manage in a career.
As a football player, Weigl experienced ups and downs. He helped 1860 in avoiding relegation from the Bundesliga 2. He then jetted to New Zealand with the Germany U-20 side for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He impressed everyone there by earning a starting berth regardless of tight competition and helping his side to win over Honduras and Nigeria just before elimination in the last eight on penalties against Mali.
The outstanding yet exhausting season with 1860 made Weigl stated that his best position is as a classic holding midfielder. He made 24 appearances for the Lions in 2014/15 that was very impressing not only with his passing game but also due to his bite in the tackle. He was praised by former coach Friedhelm Funkel because of his vision and calmness in possession. He was also appointed as the club’s youngest ever captain early in the season. Even though he lost the armband prematurely due to the off-field misdemeanors, he responded positively by working hard to develop into a main element of Sechzig’s fight against relegation.
Now, Weigl will be served well under new Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel who is eminent for his high-pressure style. His last season statistics showed that he got big potential that he completed almost 80 per cent of passes and winning over half of his tackles. He also needs to improve his abilities. When he was asked by goal.com he stated that he was going to improve his physicality by eating white eggs on a regular basis. He added that it was going to be an honor to work under Thomas Tuchel since he was very talented and Dortmund was such a big club.
