Barcelona president JosepBartomeu hailed Luis Enrique as “one of the best coaches in the world” after completing the treble in Berlin. The 45-year-old enjoyed an amazing debut season in charge of Barca, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.Josep Maria Bartomeu claimed that despite the difficulties faced during the course of the season following the Luis Enrique joining the club and the various reinforcements signed in the summer, he always knew “it could be a great year”.
The Barcelona president claimed that Luis Enrique, who still has a year left to run on his contract, is the master of his own destiny. “It’s been a difficult season, but now we are celebrating as I thought we might be last summer when Luis Enrique joined us with all the new signings,” said the Barça president.
The success is even more impressive considering there was talk of a crisis at the club in January and reports Enrique and Lionel Messi had fallen out. However, the pair were celebrating together in Berlin on Saturday evening as Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1 to win the Champions League for the fifth time in the club’s history.
Bartomeu admitted having suffered, particularly in the last few nerve-racking minutes. “Now we have won and the team has showed what it can do and done it very well. I congratulate them. We are overjoyed. I knew it was going to be tough because Juve are a team that plays very well. They created chances but we were better on the night. We’ve won the treble and capped a great season, but it’s been hard. Everyone has done their bit to bring this team along,” he said.
Bartomeu has also reaffirmed his expectation that Luis Enrique will stay, while the coach’s future is in doubt due to looming club elections.“Today he has shown that all the confidence we gave to him last summer was correct, today he graduated as one of the biggest coaches in the world. He fits perfectly and we are very happy for him. I am happy for him and the coaches working with him,” claimed Bartomeu.
The president is likely to be so sure about keeping the coach for the next great moments in the upcoming season. “Enrique has a contract with the club and he’s done a good job,” said Bartomeu. “I don’t see why he wouldn’t stay when he’s done an excellent job and has another year on his contract.”
Meanwhile, Enrique refused to be drawn on his future after the win over Juventus. He did not give clear directive answer when the press asked whether he would like to stay as Barca’s coach for the next season.
