Joao Miranda, Atletico Madrid defender was shown a straight rd card by Vicando Garrido moments before half-time for a horrible elbow on Abraham Gonzalez. He has been banned for two La Liga games during last weekend’s 0-0 draw.
This 30-years-old center-back was red-carded for the aerial challenge after which midfielder Abraham spent the night in hospital, where he was treated for a cranial trauma, whiplash and a bruised lip.
The visitor showed a bright start to the game and had created five goal chances in the opening 20 minutes. While during the game, Atletico had the better chances in La Liga to Valencia when they had Miranda sent off for a brutal challenge in first-half added time which felled opponent’s midfielder with leading arm as the pair jumped for a bouncing ball.
The team have to surrender third place in La Liga to Valencia. Atletico had suffered from many losses as they played without a win in their last four games in the tournament and need to overturn deficit after being defeated over Bayer Leverkusen.
Miranda was well aware a red card could be coming his way, and he went down after the clash, but Garrido was having none of it and gave the player his marching orders. While the Atletico player was on the ground pretending to be injured, some of the fans began to shout “murderer, murderer” at the center-back for his brutal behavior. Few Atletico players protested the referee’s decision to give him a red card as Abraham was taken off the pitch on a stretcher and taken to hospital for further treatment.
It is actually the third time Miranda has seen red card during his career with Los Rojiblancos. His last sending-off was in the 17th game of the 2012/2013 season. The punishment means that Miranda will not be able to play Atletico Madrid upcoming La Liga games at home on Saturday (21/3) and another away game at Cordoba following the upcoming international break.
According to the referee’s report, Miranda had to be sent off from the pitch for “using excessive force to hit an opponent in the face with his arm when challenging for the ball. And bad luck for Abraham who “required medical attention as a result of the incident.”
Meanwhile, the management has confirmed comments from Diego Simeone’s agent that Colchoneros coach is extending his contract at the Vicente Calderon. “We have been negotiating with Diego’s agents for a good while,” said Enrique Cerezo, the Atletico president.
