Napoli have called a press conference for Thursday (28/5) amidst rumors linking Rafael Benitez with the Real Madrid coach slot vacancy. A statement published on Napoli’s official website reads” “President Aurelio De Laurentiis announced this afternoon that in a few hours’ time there would be some news. That on Thursday, there will be a press conference held by the club president, alongside Rafa Benitez.”
According to the reports, Benitez has been described as being “99 percent” certain to be the next Real Madrid coach following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti’s departure had been anticipated since Real Madrid were knock out of the Champions League semi-finals by Juventus in early May.
Napoli boss Benitez has emerged as favorite to be the new boss for Real, and Ancelotti’s representative Ernesto Bronzetti expects the Spaniard to become the club’s 13th coach since 2003. Benitez has signed for Napoli since 2013 as the successor of Walter Mazzari. He agreed a two-year contract after meeting Laurentiis in London. During his first season, Benitez lead the club to victory in the Coppa Italia, and into the last 16 of the Europa League.
The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss won the Champions League and Copa del Rey in his first season at the Bernabeu, and also helped Real joined the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2014. However, Real could not add any more trophies this year.
Following the sacking of Ancelotti, Perez said in a press conference on Monday that the decision of the new manager of Real Madrid will be officially published next week. “I want to publicly say thank you to Carlo Ancelotti for these two years, for his hard work and all his affection, and tell him this is still his house and his home,” Perez added.
Aside from Benitez, the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Michel and Unai Emery have been linked with the Real post.
