Pep Guardiola successfully leads Bayern Munich to win Bundesliga two consecutive times. However the Bavarian giants’ success in the league is not as bright as their campaign in the Champions League and German Cup. Guardiola surely needs to improve Munich so that they could achieve more success in the European level. Munich’s defeat in the Champions league by Barcelona and in the German Cup by Borussia Dortmund indicate that the team have problem that needs a solution, otherwise they might repeat the same result next season.
One of the problems Munich have now is the fitness of the team. It is still clear how the team were smashed by Real Madrid last year and Barcelona this year. The German champions seem to have declining performance in the final weeks of the season. The same problem also occurred in the their home country where the team started to lose its dominance in the similar time. Guardiola needs to meddle with the team’s high-intensity style, their training methods and the rotation between players so that they can keep the players fresh the whole season.
Midfield of the team is also posing a probable problem for long-run competitions. Xabi Alonso, Phillip Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger are getting older and the team is participating three different competitions in one season which of course they will be like a racing horse. Pep should look for another midfielder, especially those who are young, creative and speedy ones since the ones in the team are also getting slower. Some players like Thiago Alcantara, Javi Martinez, or Joshua Kimmich can be good extra power to the midfield.
Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery are two key players for Munich. The absence of these two wingers can greatly reduce the danger posed by the German team from the edge. These two players are also aging like the midfield players, therefore Munich needs to find other tough and skilled players to back up these two. Angel Di Maria, Antoine Griezmann and Douglas Costa might be good option for Pep to choose.
The way Bayern Munich play their game is quite complicated. They often dominated the ball possession, pressuring the opponent. Guardiola really brought a new era in coaching with his flexible style on the pitch but this can also sometimes backfire. The defeat from Barcelona, Dortmund and Real Madrid show us that Pep should make the team play more simple game. With the quality players they have in their stock, Munich should be able to play more simple style yet deadly one.
