With three goals combined in their Copa del Rey victory on Saturday (30/5), Barcelona attackers Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar set a Spanish record for the most goals in a season for any trio of teammates. Lionel Messi scored wonderful goal in the Copa del Rey final as Barcelona moved a step closer to completing the treble on Saturday night (30/5) with a 3-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao.
The Saturday’s evening game between Barca and Bilbao was not only give them the lead in their pursuit of the treble in this season, but also raising the trident’s combined total-goal to the most in Spanish football history. Messi was man of the match after opening the scoring with a spectacular solo effort and also adding a well-taken second after the break, with Neymar also getting on the scoresheet when he finished off an unselfish pass from Suarez just before half-time.
Messi scored twice and Neymar also scored as Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao in the final, bringing the threesome’s tally to 120 goals in all competitions this season. The tally is considerably higher than the previous club record established by Messi, Eto’o and Henry in 2008/09, when 38 goals for Messi, 36 for Eto’o and 26 for Henry totalled exactly 100. The current frontline passed that figure in the Liga match at the Camp Nou against Getafe.
Neymar said that Messi had again proven he was the world’s best with another spectacular performance. “Leo is spectacular, he is a ‘crack.’ For me he is the best in the world,” Neymar said. “And it is an honour to be part of this team, with players of such quality,” the 23-year-old captain told the reporter after the Saturday’s game.
Messi has accounted for 58 goals in this season, while Neymar doubled the number he scored last season by netting 38, and Luis Suarez added 24 despite being suspended for the first two months of the season.
Barcelona’s prolific trio will have one more game to add to their total in the Champions League final next weekend. The attacking trio will prove difficult to stop when Luis Enrique’s side clashes against Juventus in next weekend’s Champions League final, looking to secure a treble.
While Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini says that Barcelona’s attacking trident of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez “may seem unstoppable,” but that the Bianconeriwill develop a plan to tame them in the Champions League final.
