The journey of Dortmund to reach the tile of Champions League victory came to a disappointing end on Wednesday (19/3) night at the hands of Juventus. They were abject and outclassed in a 3-0 match.
There is no time for Klopp’s men for condolences, though, as the dull Bundesliga routine is coming closer.
Borussia Dortmund will travel to Hannover 96, who is currently in the midst of a nine winless games. It will be such a good opportunity for die Schwarzgelben to get back on track after three fruitless consecutive games which gave them no score. Hoffenheim is in the seventh place, only six points in front of Borussia Dortmund.
The probability is extremely high that reaching the seventh place will be enough to get qualified for the Europa League as three of the top four Bundesliga sides are eager to reach the German Cup semifinal.
But getting into the seventh place may not be as easy as it looks. Dortmund have to fix their toxic relationship with the ball. The fact that in the last couple of matches, Klopp’s men have had the share of possession, but they could not do anything worthwhile.
Previously, in their four-game league winning streak, the club scored at least three times per match. And it is interesting to note, mysteriously, all their attacking force went out of the window after they beat down Schalke.
One major change in the club is the absence of Nuri Sahin since the derby win, which might have been enough to disrupt Dortmund’s offensive game play. At the same time, Ilkay Gundogan is suffering from severe dip in form, which resulted into struggle of the defensive midfielder to find a way through the very tight defenses of Hamburg, Cologne and Juventus. Even the game against third-tier club Dynamo Dresden was a struggle until Dortmund successfully took advantage of an individual mistake.
Jurgen Klopp will have to think about the new plan for the club’s life without the presence of Sahin who is still suffering from an abductor injury.
On the other hand, the coach cannot avoid the fact that his full-back are also slowly melting away. During their game against Juventus. Marcel Schmelzer picked up a muscle tear and had to be substituted at halftime. The injury causes him to be ruled out for the weekend games alongside Lukasz Piszczek, Kevin Grosskreutz and Erik Durm.
The last thing that the coach can do to fill up the left-back position is by giving the 19-year-old Jeremy Dudziak a run out, since neither Oliver Kirch nor Sokratis Papastathopoulos are suitable for that position.
