Iker Casillas, the Spanish professional goal keeper who plays for and captains both Real Madrid and the Spain national team conveyed that Juventus and Italy’s goal keeper, Gianluigi Buffon, is his inspiration.
Both Casillas and Buffon are the loyal players for their club and country. They have passed over 300 international appearances. Casillas who considered as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time had spoken of his friendship with Buffon, while stating that goalkeepers were not given enough appreciation.
As written in UEFA’s official website, Casillas once told that the goalkeepers were not treated like outfield players. He insisted that goalkeepers deserve more credit.
In order to be considered among the best three, four or five players in the world, a goalkeeper has to have a sensational year and won numerous trophies. On the other hand, that requirement maybe has not been the matter for other players.
Moreover, he added, it would be nice if the goalkeepers always received credit for the big responsibility they hold on the pitch.
It does not mean that Casillas’s contributions have entirely unrecognized. His miraculous litany of saves gave him a great nickname, ‘San Iker’ (Saint Iker), which was rewarded by Spain fans. He had also been considered as one of the greatest guardian of his generation. His fast and quick reflexes style was inspired by former Roja stalwart Luis Arconada.
The young Comunidad de Madrid native was also impressed by Peter Schmeichel. He is Casillas favorite goalkeeper of all time. However, it was Gianluigi Buffon who encouraged him. He made him sure that he could go on to have a bright career. For years the Italy International and Juventus goal protector was voted as the Spaniard’s main rival for him, but for Casillas he has always been so much more brilliant.
Furthermore, the third captain in football history that lifted the World Cup trophy, the Champions League trophy and the European Championship trophy explained, the fact that Gigi Buffon started his career so young helped Casillas excessively.
He described, when he saw a young goalkeeper with his appearance at Parma starting to play for Italy because the coaches had faith in him, it gave him belief that he can do the same thing.
Their careers have been nearly the same because Casillas also started when he was very young, at the age of 17 or 18, and both of them are still doing their job as the guardian under the goalposts.
Whenever they have the chance, they will have a nice chat, and he claimed that it is a friendship formed over many years.
